Splitting up with your partner is a very stressful time. Not only do you have to cope with the pain and upset of separating but, suddenly, you are faced with lots of uncertainty about the future:

  • Who will look after the children?
  • When will I get to see them?
  • What will happen to the family home?
  • What will I live on?

Agreeing things without help is far from easy and often disputes arise as you try to agree how things will be for you both now that you are no longer together. Family Mediation can be an effective way to help you make arrangements for the future.

What is mediation?

It is a process in which you and your ex-partner will explain your concerns and views to the mediator and to each other. The mediator, who is completely neutral, can help you to focus on what needs to be done and how to do it.

Once you have reached an agreement, this will be recorded so that you are both clear about what the agreement covers.  It is important to understand that you may need to then have that agreement put into a form that would be legally binding on you as this agreement on its own may not be enough.

It is important that you both take legal advice about your concerns and about any agreement, to make sure that it covers what you need it to and that it is something that can be legally enforced.

How do I arrange this?

Call us on 01245 201231 or email us to make an initial appointment so you can find out more about mediation and whether it’s the right process for you. This is called a Mediation Information Assessment Meeting (MIAM).

The number of sessions you need will depend on the number of issues to be decided and how complicated they are. There will usually be 2–6 sessions, each lasting between 1 and 2 hours. You may be able to get legal aid to cover your costs if you are on a low income and only have limited savings. You can check this online at https://www.gov.uk/check-legal-aid

Our family mediators at THB Mediation are all able to offer legal Aid Mediation, you will just be asked to provide the evidence of your finances at the start of your MIAM.
